This diversity in Mallorca's school landscape is a result of its international clientele, who wish to enjoy the amenities of Mallorca either temporarily or permanently.

Besides the international schools in Mallorca, there are essentially the Spanish state schools (Colegio Público) and the Spanish private schools (Colegio Privado), which differ not only in terms of their administration (public versus private) but also in terms of cost. Spanish state schools are free and offer lessons in the Catalan language, whereas Spanish private schools charge fees and also offer subjects in English.

The international and expatriate audience often prefers one of the private international schools, as these enable an international qualification, which allows for later internationally recognised university education.

Key differences between the two international qualifications, the IB Diploma and A-Levels

The A-Level (General Certificate of Education Advanced Level) is, alongside the International Baccalaureate (IB), the highest school-leaving qualification in Great Britain (equivalent to the Abitur). Overall, the A-Level takes two years – from Year 12 to Year 13. A-Levels were first introduced in the early 1950s and can be taken in various subjects. Subjects to be filed. Many Universities expect certain Minimum grades A-levels. The qualification is comparable to the German Abitur or the Austrian and Swiss Matura. Since 2001, in order to obtain an A-level, a programme of six subjects must be studied over two years Module existing course needs to be completed. The first three modules will be assessed after the first year and form a separate qualification as AS-Level, the three modules of the second year are considered A2-Level rated. The A-level is obtained by completing an AS and an A2 level in the same subject. It is also possible to retake modules in the second year if the exam results in the first year were not in line with the student's expectations.

The two-year-old Curriculum The IB, on the other hand, was initially developed in the 1960s as a school leavers' programme for the children of diplomats who had to attend schools in various countries. This IB programme dictates that students must choose six subjects from at least five different subject areas. In addition, every IB Diploma student must complete an extended essay (Extended Essay) and the course Theory of Knowledge to complete, which is intended to stimulate critical and international thinking. Students are encouraged through CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) to undertake extracurricular social activities. To successfully complete CAS, a group project covering at least two of the three components and requiring approximately 50 additional hours in each of the three components is necessary.

The IB programme is offered in English or Spanish in Mallorca.

When choosing a school for your children in Mallorca, you should first ask in which language the relevant school offers the IB.

Both the IB and A-levels, upon successful completion, offer access to international universities. However, with A-levels, it should be noted that the choice of subjects corresponds to future academic progression (a mathematics degree without the A-level subject of mathematics will not be recognised).

How do I find the right international school in Mallorca and which schools are there?

Given that there are different school systems with various qualifications in the international schools on Mallorca, careful selection of the right school for your children is significant. Key criteria include:

the desired school-leaving qualification

the medium of instruction

class size

Teacher training

From what age do schools take children in

the cost of training

Additional offer: Sport; Art, further languages

the school's location

In addition to the aforementioned criteria, most international schools have long waiting lists and certain admission requirements. In particular, moving up to the upper levels often only occurs through successfully passing specific entrance exams. For this reason, it is important to apply for a place at the respective school as early as possible, as well as to visit some schools in person and gain your own impression. It is recommended to arrange a meeting with the headteacher (or their representative) to discuss your child's admission. The application deadline at many international schools in Mallorca is May for the respective school year.

Below are the respective international schools with their website links for further information, and to make contact if necessary.

Green Valley School

210 Cami de La Vileta
07011 Palma – Son Puig
Telephone: +34 971 160 817

This international day school teaches using the British education system and offers the internationally recognised „International Baccalaureate“ (IB) diploma.
