For decades, the special light on Mallorca has not only impressed locals and tourists, but has also been a source of inspiration for artists, film directors, and photographers. The question is whether this phenomenon can be justified or even explained scientifically.

First, we should explain what exactly is meant by "light." Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that is described by various models in physics: ray optics, wave optics, or quantum physics. According to the latter, it consists of light particles called photons.

Light is essential for life on Earth, because plants convert light energy into chemically bound energy through photosynthesis. This serves as food for all other living beings. Natural daylight—the light of the sun filtered through the Earth's atmosphere—also has a major influence on the human organism and its health: A lack of light affects our hormones and neurotransmitters, causing fatigue and low mood. This is one of the most common reasons why many Northern Europeans escape the short days of the winter months to soak up the sunshine in Mallorca.

According to María José Guerrero, chief meteorologist at the Spanish weather service Aemet, in an interview with the Mallorca Zeitung newspaper, the meteorological reason for the island's special light is a question of visibility. In her opinion, visibility is particularly good in Mallorca, because everything appears very clear, very bright, and more colorful than in other places, especially in comparison to northern and central Europe. Light intensity is perceived by the eye as brightness, while the spectral composition of the light stimulus is perceived as color.

In comparison

In Germany, for example, there are often situations in which visibility is limited due to frequent precipitation and overcast skies. This simply means there is less light. "And the number of hours of daylight is lower than in the Mediterranean region," Guerrero explained to the Mallorca Zeitung. Pollution is also generally lower on the island because the industrial centers are far away.

The light in Mallorca is a dream for painters and photographers. November is considered the month with the most beautiful sunsets and the best light.

This natural experience on the island was also sought after by painters who brought about a "golden age" of landscape painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Catalans Santiago Rusiñol and Joaquim Mir in particular discovered a completely different light in Mallorca, especially in the Serra de Tramuntana, and were fascinated by it.

Many painters are inspired by Mallorca's characteristic light and bright colors, especially the combination of mountains, sea, and light.

Due to its light and natural beauty, Mallorca is increasingly being chosen by many film directors and screenwriters as a location for series and films. Just recently, a new series starring Hollywood star Nicole Kidman was filmed in Mallorca over a period of several weeks.
